PUTATAN (Feb 19): The Al-Biruni Observatory in Tanjung Dumpil will serve as Sabah’s official moon-sighting site while also functioning as a hub for ‘falak’ (Islamic astronomy) education and research, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor.

He said the observatory has strong potential to be further developed into a comprehensive centre for falak education and Islamic astronomy.

“The observatory can be enhanced into a competitive, high-technology research centre and an educational tourism destination, or astro-tourism hub, contributing to the state’s economic growth,” he said.

Hajiji stressed that achieving this vision requires facilities that meet the necessary standards.

The state government, he added, stands ready to assist in upgrading the observatory so it can emerge as one of Sabah’s educational tourism icons.

“This includes enhancing observation facilities, developing interactive exhibition spaces and learning halls, improving visitor amenities, and ensuring better tourist-friendly access,” he said.

His speech was delivered by Local Government and Housing minister Datuk Dr Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif at the launch of the state-level official moon-sighting ceremony for Ramadan, for the year 1447H/2026M here on Tuesday.

The Chief Minister expressed confidence that with strategic planning and cooperation among various stakeholders, the facility would become a source of pride not only for Muslims but for all Sabahans.

“I hope the younger generation present today will be able to see that the fields of falak and astronomy offer vast opportunities to explore and can develop into meaningful careers that contribute to the advancement of the ummah and the nation,” he said.

He added that events closely related to Muslim worship carry significant spiritual value and reflect the government’s commitment to ensuring Islamic religious affairs are managed with responsibility, professionalism and integrity.
