KUCHING, Feb 23: Visitors to Ramadan bazaars in Kuching are being urged to wear face masks following reports of tuberculosis (TB) cases in the city.
Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Project Coordinator for Regional Development Agencies, Kuching North City Commission and Islamic Affairs) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said the Ministry of Health (MOH) had recently alerted authorities about the spread of TB, an airborne disease.
“Those visiting crowded places, such as Ramadan bazaars, are advised to wear face masks.
“We also urge anyone experiencing symptoms, such as a persistent cough, to get early medical screening to ensure they are not affected by TB,” he said during a press conference this morning. An audio recording of his remarks was later shared with DayakDaily.
Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman further said while TB has long been considered endemic in Sarawak, authorities are taking extra precautions to prevent a surge in cases.
He noted that the local council, Kuching North City Commission (DBKU), will provide guidance to organisers of crowded events like the Ramadan bazaars within Kuching city.
Although wearing face masks is currently advisory rather than mandatory, organisers are encouraged to remind visitors to take protective measures. — DayakDaily
