KUCHING (Nov 28): Telang Usan assemblyman Dato Dennis Ngau has called for a feasibility study on a cascading dam project in his constituency.
Speaking during the Sarawak State Budget 2026 debate at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) here, he highlighted Telang Usan’s significant potential for renewable energy.
“Our rivers, including Tutoh, Akah and Patah, provide a consistent flow that is ideal for cascading power source projects, which are small-scale, safe and environmentally friendly,” he said.
He explained that cascading dams do not require large-scale flooding, preserve river flow, minimise environmental impact, and are particularly suited for rural areas.
“Most importantly, they can serve as a catalyst for rural development,” he added.
Dennis noted that such projects could provide reliable electricity to longhouses, improve roads and access routes, and create jobs and economic opportunities for local communities.
“I have received a request from the community of Sungai Akah for the state government to conduct a feasibility study for a cascading power source at Ulu Sungai Akah,” he said.
On a related note, he urged the replacement of faulty solar Sarawak Alternative Rural Electrification Scheme (Sares) batteries in Telang Usan, citing frequent blackouts in many longhouses caused by batteries that have deteriorated and can no longer hold a charge.
“I wish to highlight the worsening condition of Sares systems in many longhouses, particularly the battery units, which are now failing and causing repeated disruptions to electricity supply. This requires immediate attention,” he said.
He added that most of the Sares systems installed several years ago have reached or exceeded their usable lifespan and called on the State Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication, together with Sarawak Energy Berhad, to urgently address these needs.
“The people of Telang Usan do not ask for luxury, only basic fairness. From the perspective of Telang Usan, the Sarawak State Budget 2026 is comprehensive and responsive to the realities faced by our state, including those of rural communities,” he said, expressing his support for the budget.
