MIRI (March 29): The Three Sisters Waterfall in Ulu Baram is emerging as one of Sarawak’s most promising ecotourism destinations, drawing increasing attention from both locals and travellers for its unique beauty and rare natural features, said Datuk Dennis Ngau.

The Telang Usan sssemblyman said that as such, he plans to propose to the state government that the waterfall be gazetted as a nature park or national park, ensuring the site is preserved while providing facilities for visitors.

“This is crucial to safeguard this one-of-a-kind area and at the same time develop amenities for tourists.

“The new attraction will not only boost the local economy but also cement Sarawak’s reputation as a leading ecotourism destination in the region,” he said during the 60th Diamond Jubilee celebration of SMK Long Lama on Saturday night.

The celebration was officiated by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Dennis, who is also Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) chairman, said the waterfall is located between Long Suling, Long Liam Keliman, Long Keluan and Long San in Ulu Baram.

He said the waterfall is not only naturally stunning but also unique, making it rare not just in Sarawak but across Malaysia.

“The Three Sisters Waterfall has already been featured in Sarawak’s tourism promotions internationally, including at the World Travel Market in London and ITB Berlin. This shows the site has gained global attention and appeal,” he added.

On another note, Dennis, who is also a patron of the SMK Long Lama alumni, highlighted the need for better sports facilities at the school to nurture student talent, especially in athletics.

“A quality running track will benefit both students and the local community, serving as a hub for recreation and sports. This aligns with government efforts to foster a healthy, active, and competitive society,” he said.

He added that such a track could host district and rural-level sports competitions, raising Baram’s profile as a centre for rural sports talent.

“The estimated cost of construction is around RM3.5 million,” he said.

At the same time, he also urged the expedite the construction of the Long Bedian sub-district office to improve administrative services for more than 30 villages in rural Baram.

He called for the state government to build more housing projects under the government scheme at the Long Lama Rural Growth Centre (RGC).

Among those present were state Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin; Deputy Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Dr Ripin Lamat; Chief Political Secretary to the Sarawak Premier Datuk Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman; Baram MP Datuk Anyi Ngau; Miri Division Resident Galong Luang; and SMK Long Lama Alumni Association chairman Margaret Uding Nawan.
