MIRI (Oct 14): Community service programmes being run in the rural areas not only provide physical assistance to local residents, but also foster unity and engagement in community development.
In stating this, Telang Usan assemblyman Datuk Dennis Ngau praised Persatuan Prihatin Masyarakat Miri (PPMM) for hosting the ‘Rural Community Service Programme 2024’ in his constituency.
In his opening address for the two-day programme at Long San and Long Keluan, which concluded last weekend, Dennis said PPMM not only provided services to the residents, but also improved relations and cooperation among them.
“PPMM provided various community services including health services, dental check-ups, health check-ups, haircut services, education and food assistance, as well as safety talks and fire demonstrations,” he said.
The programme was run in collaboration with Kelab Rekreasi Pendakian dan Perkhemahan Miri and supported by Miri Hospital, Department of Dentistry Miri, and Department of Fire and Rescue (Bomba) Zone 6.
Meanwhile, organising chairman Lee Jun Tak said the programme meant to meet the needs of the rural community by providing services to those facing various challenges in their lives.
According to Lee, PPMM has donated 200 packs of food aid to the needy families in Long San and Long Keluan.
“We also visited SMK Temenggong Datuk Lawai Jau and SK St Pius to donate learning materials, fire extinguishers, school bags, clothing, and food items.
“Moreover, members of the Bomba Zone 6 conducted safety talks and fire demonstrations for the participants,” he said.
Adding on, Lee said the community services involved 22 four-wheel-drive (4WD) vehicles, which transported 85 participants comprising of healthcare workers, dentists, firefighters, barbers, sponsors, and volunteers.
Among those taking part in the programme were Chia Kah Furng, a private secretary to Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting; Kelab Rekreasi Pendakian dan Perkhemahan Miri president Vincent Lee; and deputy organising chairman Andy Jong.
