SIBU (April 4): Temporary road closures will be implemented at selected routes during the upcoming Qing Ming Festival procession here, expected to begin tomorrow.
Sibu police chief ACP Azari Miskon said traffic control will be carried out only when necessary to facilitate the smooth movement of the procession.
“Police will conduct temporary road closures and reopen them once procession participants have passed through the affected routes and junctions,” he said when contacted on Friday.
Azari stressed that the approach aims to ensure traffic flow remains smooth while accommodating the needs of the procession.
“We do not anticipate major congestion as traffic diversions will be put in place for those entering or leaving the town centre,” he added.
He said officers will be deployed at key junctions and along the procession routes to monitor the situation and guide motorists.
“At the same time, traffic personnel will be stationed at strategic locations to assist road users and maintain order throughout the event,” he said.
Azari added that the measures are intended to ensure the procession proceeds smoothly while minimising disruption to road users.
He also called on the public to cooperate with authorities to ensure the event is carried out safely and without unnecessary delays.
“Motorists are advised to remain patient, follow instructions from traffic personnel on duty, and plan their journeys ahead of time during the event,” he said.
The Qing Ming Festival, also known as Tomb-Sweeping Day, is observed by the Chinese community to honour and remember ancestors.
Families typically visit burial sites to clean graves, offer prayers, and present food and symbolic items as a mark of respect.
