KUCHING, April 7: A tribute concert honouring legendary Taiwanese singer Teresa Teng, famed for timeless hits such as The Moon Represents My Heart, will be held on July 24 and 25 at the Pullman Hotel here, featuring international performers Hu Die and Wang Tianyi, promising to take audiences on a nostalgic journey down memory lane.

Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the Teresa Teng 31st Memorial Tribute Concert is more than just a musical showcase, describing it as a celebration of a cultural icon whose voice continues to transcend borders, languages and generations.

“This is not merely a musical performance; it is a celebration of a cultural icon whose voice remains a bridge across nations, languages, and generations,” he said when unveiling the concert schedule at Sarawak Club today.

He added that the inclusion of international artistes ensures the tribute remains authentic and of world-class standard.

Reflecting on his personal connection to the late singer, Abdul Karim said Teng’s music formed a significant part of his youth, describing her as one of Asia’s greatest musical icons.

“I grew up listening to Teresa Teng’s songs. We lived in that era, and she was, I believe, the top singer that Asia has ever produced,” he said, noting that despite her short career, Teng recorded nearly 2,000 songs in multiple languages including Mandarin, English and Japanese.

The concert, organised by Luke Event Management and Entertainment, a subsidiary of Evac Holdings Group Sdn Bhd, is expected to draw strong interest, particularly among Sarawakians eager to relive cherished memories tied to Teng’s music.

Abdul Karim expressed confidence that the event, with a seating capacity of about 1,500 per night, will likely sell out given the enduring popularity of Teng’s songs.

“Many will want to be at that concert. With the right promotion, tickets will be snapped up easily,” he said, adding that the repertoire should include a mix of languages to cater to a wider audience beyond Mandarin speakers.

He highlighted The Moon Represents My Heart as one of Teng’s most internationally recognised songs, noting its widespread adaptations into English, Japanese and Korean as a testament to her global appeal.

Beyond entertainment, Abdul Karim said the concert is expected to provide a boost to Sarawak’s tourism sector, with visitors potentially travelling from Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei and Indonesia to attend the performances in Kuching.

Teng, who rose to prominence in the 1970s, passed away in 1995 in Chiang Mai, but remains an enduring idol to fans worldwide, including in Sarawak.

Meanwhile, Abdul Karim noted that the ministry continues to support the broader entertainment industry, citing upcoming events such as the Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF), which will feature a lineup of popular acts and tribute performances.

He also hinted at future announcements, including a tribute concert to a famous band from the 1960s, as part of ongoing efforts to bring diverse and nostalgic musical experiences to audiences in the state.

“It’s not easy to bring performances here, but sometimes just sitting back and listening to songs you loved in your youth can truly bring back memories,” he said, congratulating the organisers and expressing confidence in the event’s success.
