SIBU (Feb 21): Sarawak’s multicultural harmony, built on mutual respect and trust, must be protected, and social stability should never be compromised for short-term political gain, said Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.

The Federal Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture emphasised that issues affecting the community should not be unnecessarily politicised.

“Regardless of party affiliation, the people’s interests must come first.

“We must avoid creating unnecessary misunderstandings between communities or differing political views and preserve a rational and inclusive society,” the Bintulu MP said in his Chinese New Year message following open house visits to residences of several prominent local leaders here recently.

Within his party, Tiong added, unity and cooperation remain the foundation for steady progress.

“Our priority should be serving the people and advancing development and livelihood matters, not getting caught up in unproductive political disputes,” noted Tiong, who is also Dudong assemblyman.

Over the past two days, he visited 10 households, personally greeting relatives, friends, and local residents.

He said these visits, now part of his annual festive routine, allow him to reconnect with the community and keep up with local developments.

“Conversations in a humble home setting often reveal perspectives and realities that formal meetings do not. They help me better understand day-to-day concerns on the ground and ensure that the work we carry out reflects real community needs,” he said.

“This reminds me that policies and plans must ultimately make a difference on the ground. In that sense, visiting old friends during the New Year is more than a tradition, as it helps maintain and keeps me rooted in the local community,” he said.
