KUCHING, June 5: If you’re tired of renewing your passport every five years, there’s good news—the Malaysian Immigration Department (JIM) is set to introduce passport validity periods of up to 10 years, following the Fees (Passports and Visas) (Amendment) Order 2026, which was published in the Government Gazette on Wednesday (June 3).

Immigration director-general Datuk Zakaria Shaaban, when contacted by Bernama, said the implementation date would be announced soon.

According to Zakaria, passports are currently issued with a five-year validity period, and this will remain available. Once the new validity period takes effect, applicants will be able to choose between a five-year and a 10-year passport.

In the Fees (Passport and Visa) (Amendment) Order 2026, it is stipulated that the new Malaysian passport with a validity period of up to 10 years will be issued at RM350, with implementation scheduled for this year.

For individuals aged 60 and above, they will be charged RM175, while persons with disabilities aged 18 and above are entitled to a free passport under the Persons with Disabilities Act 2008.

The Government Gazette also set the fee for the first-time replacement of damaged or lost passports for citizens aged 13 to 59 at RM550.

For those over the age of 60, the fee for the first replacement is RM375, RM675 for the second, and RM1,175 for subsequent replacements.

Meanwhile, persons with disabilities aged 18 and above and JIM personnel are charged RM200 for the first replacement, RM500 for the second, and RM1,000 for subsequent cases.

At the moment, Malaysians are charged RM200 for passports with a five-year validity period, while senior citizens pay RM100. — DayakDaily
