KUCHING (Jan 14): The Rentap Fighting Championship 7.0 (RFC7) is set to light up Kuching this weekend with a showcase of top-tier Muay Thai action, featuring some of Malaysia’s finest fighters and a WBC MuayThai Malaysia championship bout.
Senior Assistant Commissioner (SAC) Zulfikar Mohd Ghazali, who is WBC MuayThai Malaysia president, said the seventh edition of the championship will feature seven professional bouts, with the main event seeing two champions battle for the prestigious WBC MuayThai belt.
“The main event will pit defending champion Muhammad Hasbullah Mood of Rentap Muay Thai Gym against Wassof Rumijam from Kuala Lumpur, who is a recent SEA Games gold medallist.
“They will compete in the 53.5kg bantamweight category,” he told a press conference at CityOne Megamall here.
Zulfikar explained that WBC MuayThai, headquartered in Bangkok, is a long-established international organisation that initially focused on boxing before expanding into Muay Thai.
As president of WBC MuayThai Malaysia, he said the organisation’s main objective is to elevate local Malaysian talents to the international professional arena.
“Our aim is to highlight and develop Malaysian fighters so they can build professional careers and compete at the international level. We hope the public will come forward to support this championship,” he said.
He added that fighters selected to contest for the WBC MuayThai belt are assessed through a structured ranking system, which evaluates their performance, experience, and competition history at both national and international levels.
Final approval is required from WBC MuayThai headquarters in Bangkok.
Also present at the press conference was TVS Chief Media Officer Mohamad Sardon Zainal.
RFC7 will take place from Jan 16 to 18 at The Summer Shopping Mall, Kota Samarahan, and will feature amateur, semi-professional, and professional bouts, including women’s matches and submission grappling.
Among the Malaysian fighters set to compete are ambassadors Miki Ghazali and Kabilan Jelevan, as well as Mia Ghazali, Boy Prata, Muhammad Hasbullah Mood, Mohammad Izzat Zulfaqar, and several other local talents.
The event is supported by the State Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts and sanctioned by the Sarawak Muaythai Association and Malaysia Muaythai Association.
Admission is free and open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis, with organisers expecting a strong turnout as interest in Muay Thai continues to grow in Sarawak.
