MIRI (Oct 22): Tree-planting exercises are not merely about planting more trees to reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality, but also highlights the need to focus on waste management, said Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin.

The state Transport Minister in a statement said improper disposal of waste has been an issue in Miri, with beaches littered by garbage as well as debris being washed up ashore.

“The main intention of tree-planting exercises is to highlight more environmental issues. For Miri to become a tourist destination, our city must be clean with a focus on beautification and legislation efforts, making it more attractive for visitors.

“We are aware of the city’s beautiful beaches, but it is tarnished by rubbish,” he said when officiating at a tree-planting ceremony held at Yuh Fah Garden’s recreational park at Jalan Nasturium, here yesterday.

To overcome the root of the problem, the Senadin assemblyman said efforts by the state government and its relevant departments need to be supported by the local communities and non-governmental organisations.

“Therefore, I hope everyone can cooperate on this issue, making sure not to indiscriminately dispose garbage,” he added.

On the tree-planting exercise, Lee praised Miri City Council, Lions Club of Miri Mandarin, Unity Dance Academy Miri, X’Closive DJ Academy & Studio, and Heirtage Culture Restaurant, for organising the programme.
