KUCHING, May 22: The Tung Fatt Lion Dance Association will represent Sarawak at the 21st Genting National Lion Dance Championship – East Malaysia Regional Competition, scheduled to take place on May 24, 2026, in Tawau, Sabah.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng has congratulated the team, praising their dedication, discipline, and commitment in promoting Sarawak’s cultural identity through the traditional art of lion dance.
He said the participation of the Tung Fatt Lion Dance Association reflects not only strong teamwork and perseverance, but also the importance of preserving cultural heritage for future generations.
“Lion dance is more than just a cultural performance. It is part of the growing creative and cultural industries that connect performing arts, event entertainment, tourism, youth development, and heritage presentation,” he said in a statement today.
Wee added that lion dance performances continue to play an important role in community celebrations, tourism events, cultural festivals, and international exchanges, bridging tradition with modern creative industries while strengthening cultural appreciation among younger generations.
He also commended the team’s determination and sacrifice in preparing for the competition despite limited training facilities.
According to him, the team currently does not have a proper venue for training. In support of youth and cultural development, MBKS has allowed the association to use the MBKS Community Hall’s car park area as a temporary training ground ahead of the competition.
“This initiative reflects MBKS’ commitment to supporting community-based cultural and sports activities, especially those involving youth development and heritage preservation,” he added.
Wee also highlighted that Kuching, as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, continues to encourage cultural and creative initiatives that strengthen community unity, nurture local talent, and promote Sarawak’s multicultural identity.
He expressed confidence that the Tung Fatt Lion Dance Association will perform with pride and professionalism while representing Sarawak at the regional championship in Tawau.
Wee concluded by wishing the team success and encouraging them to continue embodying the spirit of “Sarawak Boleh” throughout the competition. — DayakDaily
