KUCHING, April 16: Two childcare workers were brought before the Sessions Court here today after they were separately charged with the alleged abuse of a two-year-old boy at a nursery in Stampin Baru, with both women pleading not guilty.
The 25-year-old accused, believed to be a teacher at the childcare centre, was charged with directly inflicting physical harm on the toddler.
She is alleged to have shaken the child, pulled his hair and slapped him, actions said to be capable of causing injury.
In a separate proceeding before a different judge, a 22-year-old woman, also linked to the same facility, was charged with failing to prevent the abuse, thereby allowing the child to come to harm while under her supervision.
The alleged incident is said to have occurred at about 11am on April 9, 2026, at the nursery in Stampin Baru.
Both women were charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which carries a penalty of a fine of up to RM50,000, imprisonment of up to 20 years, or both upon conviction.
Following their not guilty pleas, the court fixed bail at RM10,000 each.
The 25-year-old was ordered to post bail in cash with two local sureties, as directed by Judge Noorhisham Mohd Jaafar.
Meanwhile, Judge Iris Awen Jon allowed the 22-year-old to be released on bail of the same amount without deposit, also with two local sureties.
Both cases have been set for case management on May 18, 2026. The court also ordered both accused to report to the nearest police station once a month pending the disposal of their cases.
The prosecution was conducted separately by Deputy Public Prosecutors Chuah Kai Sheng and Marvind Kaliyani, while the accused were represented by counsel Yong Suk Hui and Sanjan Daik respectively. — DayakDaily
