KUCHING (Sept 5): Two officers from an enforcement agency have been remanded until Sept 10 for allegedly receiving a bribe of RM10,000 from a company.

The remand order was issued by Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali following an application by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Sarawak today.

MACC Sarawak in a statement said the suspects, in their 30s, were nabbed at a fast food outlet in Sri Aman between 7pm and 8.30pm on Wednesday.

“They are believed to have solicited a bribe in return for not taking action against a company which was suspected of not having valid work permits for its foreign workers,” it said.

Meanwhile, MACC Sarawak director Hasbilah Mohamad Salleh confirmed the pair’s arrest, saying they are being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009.

The Section provides imprisonment for up to 20 years and a fine not less than five times the amount of the bribe, or RM10,000, whichever is higher, upon conviction.
