KUALA LUMPUR: History is not only a reflection of the past but also the foundation for building a better future.
Head of State (TYT) Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar stressed this point, urging local scholars to expand research and writings on Sarawak’s history, covering various perspectives, including the era before and after the Brooke administration.
“I call on the academic community to continue playing a vital role in strengthening the teaching of history at the national level.
“Close collaboration between historians, the government, and educational institutions is key to ensuring that Malaysian history is taught more thoroughly and effectively, so future generations can appreciate and understand our nation’s heritage.”
He made these remarks in a Facebook post following a special meeting with several prominent national historians in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday (Oct 22), where they discussed various issues related to Malaysia’s history.
The meeting is part of an initiative to ensure that the nation’s history, particularly that of Sarawak, receives the attention it deserves.
Among the historians invited to the discussion were Dr Mustafa Ahmad, Professor Emeritus Datuk Dr Abdullah Zakaria Ghazali, Professor Dr Ishak Saat, Associate Professor Dr Abu Hanifah Haris, Dr Roslini Allani Abdul Kadir, and Tengku Marzuki Tengku Ismail.
The discussion was deep and comprehensive, focusing on aspects of Malaysian history that have been less explored, as well as the importance of Sarawak’s history and that of other states within the national historical narrative.
Wan Junaidi stressed that a deep understanding of the nation’s history is crucial for both Malaysian leaders and citizens.
