KUCHING: Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar visited former senior government official Effendi Ariffin at his residence on Jalan Muhibah, here yesterday (Sept 14).

In a post on Wan Junaidi’s official Facebook page, it was noted that he arrived at 10:30 am and was welcomed by Effendi’s son, Eddy Roestam Effendi.

Effendi, who served as the Private Secretary to the late Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud during his tenure as Chief Minister of Sarawak, has been in poor health following a stroke six months ago and is currently unable to speak and requires extensive care.

During the visit, Wan Junaidi inquired about Effendi’s health, and Eddy expressed surprise and gratitude for the visit, adding that it acknowledged Effendi’s contributions to the state.

He described Wan Junaidi’s gesture as a meaningful example for new leaders, pointing out the importance of remembering and valuing dedicated service.

“The presence of Tun also demonstrates that the services of my father to the state and its leaders are acknowledged, and it sets an example for new leaders.

“It symbolises that leaders will not forget the services of their officials as long as ‘you are worth it’,” he added.

He said that Wan Junaidi’s gesture set an example for new leaders, showing that dedicated service is remembered and valued.

“We felt that he had a true connection with the people, and his demeanour was very down-to-earth.

“During our conversation, he was very casual, which made me feel that he was not bound by protocol. His humble attitude was touching,” he said.
