PETALING JAYA:

The meeting between PAS and Umno leaders last night only discussed ways to cooperate and maintain national political stability, says Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Zahid said the meeting did not involve party presidents, or touch on the revival of the Muafakat Nasional alliance.

“We did not discuss that. There are many possibilities and new avenues for understanding, but it is still too early to say anything.

“What is important is that Barisan Nasional formed the unity government with Pakatan Harapan and our friends in Sarawak and Sabah. Even more importantly, we will maintain the current government until the end of its term,” Harian Metro reported him as saying in Putrajaya today.

Zahid, who is also the deputy prime minister, said Umno frequently held such discussions with various parties, including its partners in the unity government.

“There are many possibilities in politics, which is dynamic. As such, our doors are always open not only to discuss politics but also how we can translate the national agenda together,” he said.

Earlier today, FMT quoted an unnamed Bersatu leader as accusing PAS of attempting to revive its MN alliance with Umno without going through official Perikatan Nasional channels.

The Bersatu Supreme Council member alleged that at the meeting last night, PAS had negotiated a new political arrangement involving Umno and figures aligned with former Bersatu deputy president Hamzah Zainudin.

MN was formalised by Umno and PAS in 2019, but effectively collapsed after PAS joined Bersatu to form PN the following year.
