KOTA KINABALU (Feb 21): Two lecturers from Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) have been appointed as committee members of the Malaysian Institute of Chemistry (IKM) Sabah Branch and Federal Territory of Labuan for the 2026/2027 session.
Associate Professor Dr Mohd Sani Sarjadi and Associate Professor Dr Newati Wid, both from the Faculty of Science and Technology’s Industrial Chemistry programme, were elected through voting during the 33rd Annual General Meeting of the IKM Sabah Branch and Federal Territory of Labuan, held recently at the Pacific Sutera Hotel.
The appointments recognise the expertise and active contributions of UMS academics in advancing the development of chemistry at state and regional levels.
Mohd Sani said that as an IKM Fellow, the role carries the responsibility of strengthening the contribution of professional chemists to the nation’s science and technology development.
“IKM is a professional body that brings together chemists from various sectors, including manufacturing, services, higher education institutions, research and development, as well as the government sector.
“It serves as a platform uniting chemists to advance the field of chemistry through various professional and educational activities.
“Among the initiatives implemented are professional courses, continuing education programmes, technical visits and science outreach activities such as the Malaysian Chemistry Carnival (K2M),” he said in a statement.
Mohd Sani added that the longstanding collaboration between UMS and IKM has strengthened professional networks and ensured that the university’s curriculum remains aligned with industry requirements.
“Involvement in IKM enables the university to obtain up-to-date information on professional standards and industry needs, thereby enhancing graduates’ employability.
“It is hoped that this appointment will serve as a catalyst for more collaborative programmes that benefit the community and raise public awareness of the importance of chemistry,” he said.
The meeting was also attended by IKM Vice-President Dr Yang Farina Abdul Aziz, representing IKM President Datuk Dr Soon Ting Kueh.
The appointment of the two UMS lecturers is expected to further strengthen strategic ties between the university and the professional body, while contributing to the advancement of chemistry in Sabah and the Federal Territory of Labuan.
