ADVERTISE HERE

An uncovered drain at the entrance of the Pos Malaysia branch in Keningau poses a safety hazard to members of the public.
KENINGAU (Jan 27): The main entrance to the Pos Malaysia branch here has drawn public concern after an open drain was left uncovered, turning access to the post office into what some described as a “nerve-testing obstacle” rather than a safe walkway.
The uncovered drain, located directly at the entrance, is currently marked only by two empty paint buckets—a temporary measure more commonly seen at construction sites than at a public service facility.
Ironically, this is the very entrance used daily by members of the public attending to official matters such as paying bills, collecting parcels, and managing important documents.
Observations suggest the issue is not new, with grass visibly growing inside the drain, indicating that the problem has persisted without permanent remedial action.
Concerns have been raised over safety, particularly during peak hours and at night, as the post office is located near a busy night market where lighting can be poor.
The risk is further heightened during rainy weather when visibility is reduced.
Members of the public noted that the makeshift warning is insufficient, especially for the elderly, children, persons with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups, for whom the uncovered drain poses a danger.
“This is not about blaming anyone, but about ensuring public safety,” said a concerned resident, adding that the entrance to a public institution should prioritise accessibility and safety.
The public is urging relevant authorities to carry out immediate and permanent repairs, including installing proper drain covers, improving the walkway, and ensuring adequate safety measures are in place.
They stressed that public service facilities should make daily errands easier for the community—not turn them into a test of balance and chance.
