KUCHING, Jan 27: Applications for financial assistance under the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) must be submitted by the end of February to avoid delays in fund disbursement.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said assemblymen and houses of worship had been advised to submit their applications early, allowing Unifor to expedite processing and issue cheques by June.
He also reminded recipients to ensure that funds are spent according to approved plans and that progress reports are submitted to Unifor.
“Last year, we faced a number of issues that caused delays. That is why I want to remind all recipients to ensure that the funds are spent as approved.
“Most importantly, you must submit your progress reports to Unifor. Unless we receive your report and the funds are properly utilised, we will not consider any further applications from that house of worship,” he said.
Uggah said this during the presentation of financial assistance for places of worship under Unifor’s Phase 4 for 2025 at the Main Meeting Room, Wisma Bapa Malaysia, here today.
On last year’s projects, Uggah said 309 projects were approved, excluding the current batch, but 285 had yet to submit their completion or progress reports.
“Some of them may have only just received the funds, but we are monitoring the situation closely,” he said, adding that Unifor officers are actively conducting site visits and engagements.
Uggah, who also oversees Unifor, said the unit had received assistance from the Public Works Department (JKR), which provided quantity surveyors and architects to assess and verify projects.
“JKR has its bill of quantities, so the cost of works cannot deviate from the approved figures,” he said.
Meanwhile, on applications for cemetery land, Uggah said discussions are ongoing as many parties have submitted requests.
“We are still discussing and working out the terms of reference,” he said. — DayakDaily
