Union reflects GPS’s cohesive power

KUCHING: The recent decision by Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) to align with the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) proves Gabungan Parti Sarawak’s (GPS) strength and unity as a coalition of local parties.

Political analyst Dr. Nur Aida Kipli said that this reflects the GPS coalition’s dedication to Sarawak’s development and welfare.

“Other parties need to realise that relying on GPS can propel the party wanting to join forward,” she told New Sarawak Tribune today (Dec 26).

While acknowledging PSB-PDP’s unification as a significant step, Dr. Kipli cautioned that it must prioritise GPS’s shared objectives, not individual party interests.

“The merger should focus on Sarawak’s collective economic and developmental goals for 2030,” she said.

Recently, PSB deputy president Dr Johnical Rayong Ngipa said the party was expected to be dissolved before Chinese New Year, with its members joining PDP en bloc.

Rayong said he was informed by party president Wong that the party had received the ‘green light’ to join PDP.

However, Rayong said PSB would first need to be dissolved before its 80,000 members across Sarawak could collectively join PDP.

PDP president Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing has urged his party to welcome the new PSB members.

Meanwhile, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg denies issuing such approval. “The green light didn’t come from us; our meeting on the matter is pending,” Abang Johari said.
