KUCHING, April 19: The Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) Convention 2026 has proven to be a powerful platform for unity, bringing together more than 5,000 delegates from across the State.

The discussions and interactions throughout the convention strengthened solidarity among members, with attendees leaving in high spirits, observed Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) veteran Dato Peter Minos.

“The gathering successfully reinforced cohesion and a shared sense of purpose within GPS. Delegates expressed strong confidence in the leadership.

“One delegate from Miri described Sarawak as fortunate to have a ‘brilliant and capable Premier’. Another from Lundu welcomed the unity within GPS, while a delegate from Sibu hoped the Premier would continue leading for many years, praising his effectiveness and inspirational leadership,” said Minos in a statement after attending the GPS Convention held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) today.

Minos added that the atmosphere was notably vibrant, with leaders from all four GPS component parties, PBB, Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP), Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) and Progressive Democratic Party (PDP), taking to the stage to call for unity and urge delegates to be prepared for a possible State election by year-end.

He said the highlight of the convention was the hour-long address by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, whose central message emphasised that unity within GPS is crucial in facing future challenges.

“United we are respected and strong; disunited we are despised,” Minos quoted, expressing his support for Abang Johari’s message.

Minos added that with strong leadership, financial capacity and technical capability, Sarawak is well positioned to accelerate its development agenda for both the State and its people.

Sarawak, he noted, now has robust financial resources from multiple revenue streams, enabling major initiatives such as the coastal highway and bridge projects, the acquisition of Bintulu Port from the federal government, as well as strategic investments in Affin Bank and AirBorneo.

Looking ahead, he said education and skills development remain key priorities. Sarawak is investing heavily in free tertiary education for its people while also exploring new frontiers such as space research, advanced industries and artificial intelligence.
“These developments are aimed at securing a better future for the State and its people,” he explained.

“We must move with the times, embracing new technologies and global ideas,” said Minos, who is also Serian District Council chairman. — DayakDaily
