KUCHING, June 14: Malaysia’s greatest shield against rising global uncertainty is not military hardware or economic strength, but national unity, says Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Dato’ Seri Tiong King Sing.
Speaking after attending the Hari Gawai celebration held in conjunction with the Jelajah Wira MADANI 2026 programme yesterday (June 13), Tiong warned that division would weaken the country at a time when geopolitical tensions and economic pressures are growing worldwide.
“In today’s increasingly challenging world, unity is the most valuable asset that we must defend,” he said in a Facebook post.
Tiong said Malaysians must reject division and instead strengthen mutual respect, understanding and cooperation across racial and cultural lines.
“Let us make diversity our strength in building a better future. Unity is the key to stability, economic progress and national development,” he added.
The minister attended the celebration at the invitation of the 9th Brigade and the Malaysian Army, where he met serving personnel, veterans and their families.
Tiong used the occasion to underline the link between national unity and security, saying the peace Malaysians enjoy today is the result of the armed forces’ sacrifices and unwavering commitment.
“The peace and stability we enjoy today did not come on their own. They are the result of the sacrifices and continuous commitment of military personnel who are always ready to defend the nation,” he said.
He also described the Jelajah Wira MADANI programme as more than a ceremonial event, calling it an effort to reconnect ordinary Malaysians with the realities of national defence and patriotism.
“Programmes like this help the people better understand the role of our soldiers in safeguarding security and sovereignty, while strengthening patriotism and love for the country,” he said.
On Hari Gawai, Tiong said the festival is not only a thanksgiving celebration for the Dayak community in Sarawak, but also a powerful symbol of the State’s multicultural harmony.
He expressed hope that similar programmes would continue to be organised to deepen ties between the military and the public, and ended his message with Hari Gawai greetings: “Gayu Guru Gerai Nyamai, Lantang Senang Nguan Menua.” — DayakDaily
