KUCHING (March 23): Unity, political stability and rational decision-making ahead of the coming state election are crucial for the state’s continued development, said Datuk Wee Hong Seng.

Speaking at the Tua Pek Kong birthday celebration at the Nine Emperor Gods Temple at Jalan Selangan Batu last Friday night, the Kuching South mayor said Sarawak’s progress and harmony did not happen by chance, but were built on a stable, pragmatic and people-centric administration led by Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS).

“The Sarawak government has consistently prioritised the people’s welfare through policies covering infrastructure, education, healthcare and economic growth, all aimed at improving quality of life.

“At the local level, efforts such as road resurfacing, drainage upgrades, and improved street lighting may seem basic, but they directly impact residents’ daily lives,” he said.

Wee also reminded the public to “think carefully” and “avoid being swayed” by misleading information or emotional rhetoric as the state polls draw near.

“This is not just an election but a defining moment for Sarawak’s future. We must ask who truly understands Sarawak, who fights for its rights, and who can continue to lead it forward.”

On social cohesion, he highlighted that Sarawak’s multicultural and multi-religious society remains one of its greatest strengths, noting that traditional celebrations such as the Tua Pek Kong festival reflect both the Chinese community’s cultural heritage and the broader spirit of inclusiveness.

He said the Chinese community continues to play a significant role in the state’s development, with their voice recognised within Sarawak’s political landscape.

“Development requires long-term planning and consistent leadership, which can only be achieved under a stable political environment,” he added.

Also present were Padawan Municipal Council chairman Tan Kai, and councillors Eric Tay and Albert Tay.
