KUCHING (March 7): Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian has called on Sarawakians to uphold unity, strong values and pride in their homeland as the state continues its journey towards greater prosperity and autonomy.
Speaking at the Sarawak United People’s Party Kota Sentosa Branch Lunar New Year gathering and International Women’s Day celebration at a local restaurant on Friday, Dr Sim said festive occasions such as Lunar New Year symbolise the importance of returning home and strengthening family and community bonds.
The State Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government noted that the Kota Sentosa constituency has grown and evolved since 2008 through the contributions of past leaders, current representatives and emerging young leaders.
“This ‘home’ we have built is not only for ourselves but for all Sarawakians. For decades, we have worked for the people of Sarawak and contributed to the state’s development,” he said.
Dr Sim emphasised that political stability and long-standing partnerships within the Sarawak government have enabled the state to achieve significant progress, including financial support for Chinese independent schools, higher education institutions and community development.
According to him, Sarawak is now gaining greater recognition nationwide for its achievements and forward-looking policies.
“Four years ago, people underestimated Sarawak. Today, people respect and place hope in Sarawak.
“The whole of Malaysia is watching Sarawak because of our stability and the way we manage our affairs,” he said.
Dr Sim also stressed the importance of safeguarding Sarawak’s rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and ensuring that the state’s natural resources benefit its people.
Looking ahead, he said the next five years will be crucial as Sarawak pushes for greater autonomy in areas such as education and healthcare, while nurturing a new generation of capable leaders.
“We must ensure the next generation is even better, wiser and stronger so they can continue building Sarawak,” he said.
He also highlighted the importance of family values, respect for elders and unity, describing them as the foundation for building a strong and prosperous Sarawak by 2030.
“If Sarawakians do not love Sarawak, who will?” he asked, calling for all Sarawakians to remain united and move forward together.
Also present were Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap and event organising chairperson Cecelia Quek Koh Mei.
