KUCHING, April 2: Sarawak has strengthened its disaster preparedness and response capabilities with the completion of the upgraded State Disaster Command Centre (SDCC) at Wisma Bapa Malaysia, funded by the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA).
Deputy Premier and Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the RM750,000 upgrade marks a strategic milestone in enhancing the State’s disaster management system through a more modern and integrated control centre.
“Our ceremony this morning is for the handover of the Sarawak State Disaster Command Centre, which was upgraded a few months ago and is now completed,” he said after chairing the SDMC meeting and witnessing the handing over of SDCC from NADMA to SDMC at Wisma Bapa Malaysia today.
He expressed appreciation to NADMA for the funding, noting that the upgraded facility is now equipped with advanced tools and the latest technology to support more efficient monitoring and emergency response operations.
Located on Level 1 of Wisma Bapa Malaysia, the enhanced SDCC features improved operational space designed to function as a fully integrated disaster control centre, strengthening coordination in communication, monitoring and response.
Uggah said the upgraded centre would enable faster and more effective action during emergencies across Sarawak, given the State’s vast geographical landscape.
“I am confident that with the completion of this upgraded State Disaster Command Centre, we will be more effective in managing any disasters that may occur throughout Sarawak. As everyone knows, Sarawak is a vast area, so good communication is essential,” he said.
He added that NADMA has emphasised the importance of disseminating accurate information from the centre, particularly in the current digital age where misinformation can spread rapidly during disasters such as floods and the ongoing hot and dry season.
The upgrade is expected to significantly enhance operational efficiency and ensure the safety and well-being of Sarawakians through improved disaster coordination and response.
