KUCHING (March 2): Orang Ulu community leaders must continue upholding customs, and also leading with integrity and sincerity.

This was highlighted by Telang Usan assemblyman Dato Dennis Ngau at the presentation of certificates of appointment to the ‘ketua kaum’ (KK, or community headmen) for Telang Usan District, held at Dewan SJKC Kee Tee in Long Lama last weekend.

“Your appointment represents a major trust placed upon by the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government and also the people; it is not merely a position, but a great trust from the GPS government and the villagers and the community.

“It is a responsibility, not a privilege; therefore, be fair in every decision.

“Do not side with family, friends or certain interests.

“Let the community see you as leaders who are honest, transparent and trustworthy.

“Leaders must, at times, place their family’s needs behind the needs of the people whom they lead,” he said at the event, which also hosted more than 400 community and grassroots leaders, including those representing village development and security committees (JKKKs).

Dennis also stressed about unity being the community’s strength – one that must always be defended.

“Never allow politics, differences of opinions, race or religion to divide the community.

“Be the bridge between the people and the government. Be the eyes, ears and mouth of the government. When conflicts arise, be the voice that can calm situations and bring peace,” he added.
