MIRI (Dec 25): Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia Chiew Choon Man urged Malaysians to continue embracing religious freedom and openness, describing them as fundamental pillars of the nation’s social fabric, particularly during the Christmas season.

In his Christmas message to Christians and Malaysians celebrating the festive season, Chiew said Christmas is a meaningful occasion that transcends religious boundaries.

While rooted in the Christian faith, he said the values embodied by Christmas ― love, compassion, forgiveness, generosity and peace ―resonate universally and are shared across cultures and religions in Malaysia.

“Malaysia’s strength lies in its diversity. As a multicultural and multireligious nation, Malaysians have long demonstrated the ability to live together in mutual respect, understanding and acceptance,” he said.

According to Chiew, festive seasons such as Christmas offer an opportunity for people of different races and beliefs to come together, not only to celebrate, but also deepen interfaith understanding and reinforce social cohesion.

He emphasised that differences in culture, language and belief should be viewed as strength rather than weaknesses, adding that national harmony is achieved when diversity is embraced with sincerity and respect.

Chiew also highlighted the importance role of arts, culture and tourism in promoting unity, noting that cultural celebrations, heritage festivals and community events allow both Malaysians and visitors to experience the country’s diversity.

“Through cultural exchange and shared experiences, understanding is fostered and prejudices are broken down,” he said, adding that the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture remains committed to promoting inclusive cultural initiatives that bring communities together.

Chiew said Festive celebrations such as Christmas, Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Kaamatan, Gawai and Deepavali are not only religious or cultural observances, but also platforms for strengthening national unity and social harmony.

Chiew called on Malaysians to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas by extending kindness and compassion to those in need, including the underprivileged, the elderly and marginalised communities, in order to build a more caring and empathetic society.
