BAU (Dec 6): A total of 30 visually-impaired participants and volunteers took part in a climb at Bung Jagoi on Saturday in conjunction with the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD).

The one-day programme, organised by The Society of the Blind in Malaysia (SBM) Sarawak branch, aimed to highlight the abilities of visually-impaired individuals and raise public awareness of the challenges they face.

Branch chairman D’Carlus Maclin Daes said the climb was held to commemorate IDPD on Wednesday and to encourage the community to embrace diversity without discrimination.

“This hike carries a strong symbol that although we may lack vision, we do not lack spirit and determination to go further.

“I would express my gratitude and appreciation to Betong MP Dato Dr Richard Rapu and State Deputy Transport Minister Dato Henry Harry Jinep for their support and contribution towards the association’s empowerment efforts,” he said.

The state branch deputy chairman Rangong Unggang, 37, said the climb was held to show that individuals with visual impairment are capable of accomplishing activities often perceived as extreme.

“This programme is to prove that the blind can participate in adventurous activities and do meaningful things. We hope this will raise awareness among the public and open more opportunities for us to carry out similar activities in the future,” he said.

He also hoped that the event would encourage private and corporate sectors to contribute support and funding for the association’s initiatives.

Meanwhile, one of the participants, 48-year-old Umtum Bilun from Sibu, expressed her joy at being able to join the climb.

“It is a way of proving that persons with disabilities are capable of pushing their limits and making achievements.

“It is challenging for me but I feel happy to be here. I want to show that persons with visual impairment can also do something and contribute. We can achieve things just like anyone else,” she said.

The programme was officiated by Bau District Officer Eddy Nayoi.
