SIBU (Feb 20): Federal Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing has urged Chinese community associations in Sibu to move beyond traditional cultural roles and become active drivers of tourism and local economic growth as part of Visit Malaysia 2026.

Speaking at the United Chinese Association (UCA) Chinese New Year Gathering here, Tiong said 2026 offers a timely opportunity for community-based organisations to reposition themselves as strategic partners in promoting Sarawak, particularly Sibu, as a vibrant and welcoming destination.

“This year is Visit Malaysia Year 2026. I hope everyone will come together to promote the many resources we have in Malaysia, especially in Sarawak, including Sibu,” he said.

He stressed that tourism development should not be the government’s responsibility alone, but a collective effort involving associations, traders, service providers, and residents.

“Only when we unite our thoughts and efforts linking the community, businesses, government and visitors closely together can we truly build Sibu into a dynamic and attractive city where everyone benefits,” he said.

Tiong noted that the Sibu Chinese community, through UCA, plays a crucial role not only in safeguarding cultural heritage and Chinese education, but also in cultivating young leaders, strengthening women’s and youth wings, and sustaining charitable initiatives.

“In this new era of rapid information technology development, we must move forward with steady steps and forward-thinking strategies.

“By integrating resources among member associations and pooling collective wisdom, we can continue to strengthen the Chinese community,” he said.

He emphasised that unity remains the foundation of long-term progress.

“One person can walk fast, but a group of people can walk far. We must cherish the hard-earned social harmony we enjoy today and never allow differences to erode trust and unity, especially by provoking racial discord,” he said.

At the same time, Tiong called on community leaders to uphold professionalism and hospitality when receiving tourists and promoting local culture.

“We must let visitors feel our warmth and sincerity. Every interaction should reflect integrity, mutual assistance and a sense of responsibility. If we work together, Sibu will not only become a destination of choice, but also a more united, prosperous and warm home for all,” he added.

In a show of support, Tiong announced an allocation of RM100,000 to the UCA to assist in its activities and initiatives, particularly in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2026.

He encouraged association leaders and members to strengthen communication and collaboration among their respective bodies to consolidate their collective strength.

The gathering brought together leaders and representatives from various Chinese associations across Sibu Division to usher in the Year of the Horse in a spirit of unity and renewed purpose.

Also present were UCA Sibu chairman Ngieng Hock Teck; Sarawak Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee; Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek; Bawang Assan assemblyman Datuk Sri Wong Soon Koh; Lanang MP Alice Lau; and Sarawak United People’s Party Youth chief Kevin Lau.
