SIBU, March 21: The Sarawak government is taking decisive action to rescue the Taman Muhibbah housing project in Meradong, which has been abandoned for over seven years, by bringing in a new developer as a ‘white knight’ to take over and restore the stalled development, safeguarding the interests of affected buyers.

In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news, Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang said a meeting involving all relevant parties, including legal representatives, is scheduled at the Pelawan Service Centre on March 24 to formally initiate the legal process for the project’s recovery.

Among the key measures to be implemented is terminating the services of the current developer and facilitating the appointment of the new developer to resume and complete the project.

“The prolonged delays have affected more than 20 buyers who invested their lifelong savings, leaving them in uncertainty. This situation cannot be allowed to continue, and immediate action is essential to put the project back on track,” he stressed.

As the Pelawan assemblyman, he added that his ministry will act as a facilitator, coordinating a comprehensive recovery effort involving all stakeholders.

He also noted that financial aspects, including bank guarantees and loan facilities, will be restructured to support the project’s implementation after the takeover.

Tiang further emphasised that the failure of the existing developer to fulfill their responsibilities, resulting in the project being left incomplete, is unacceptable, and urgent recovery measures must be executed in the best interest of the buyers. — DayakDaily
