KUCHING, Jan 28: Women in Sarawak recorded slightly higher happiness scores than men in 2024, underscoring the critical role of women’s well-being in family stability and community resilience, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Speaking at the International Women’s Day 2026 celebration for the Borneo Zone at a prominent hotel here today, he cited the 2024 National Happiness Index, which showed women in the state scoring 7.54 compared with 7.52 for men.
“The well-being of women is a foundation for strong families and resilient communities.
“Women’s physical, mental, and emotional health directly impacts social cohesion and development,” he said.
Abang Johari said the State government continues to prioritise women’s welfare through initiatives encompassing economic empowerment, education, leadership development, social protection, and access to healthcare services.
“Through targeted programmes, women gain income opportunities, skills training, and access to digital tools, enabling meaningful participation in the modern economy while preserving their cultural identity,” he added.
He also highlighted women’s growing presence in leadership and decision-making positions, noting that as of Dec 2025, women held 39.3 per cent of senior management roles in public agencies and accounted for 33 per cent of board members in 100 publicly listed companies in 2024.
“Continued investment in women’s well-being and empowerment is crucial for Sarawak’s progress and sustainable development.
“Strong women mean strong families. Strong women mean a strong Sarawak,” he stressed. — DayakDaily
