BAU (Feb 2): Preliminary work has begun on the Serikin Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) Complex.
Deputy Minister of Transport Datuk Henry Harry Jinep said once completed, the Bau area is expected to become an increasingly important hub for trade, tourism, and investment.
He said the project contractor received the letter of award in mid-December.
“The contractor has been awarded the project and has started site surveys. It will take about two years to complete, and we expect the Serikin ICQS to be operational sometime in 2028,” he told reporters after lighting decorative lights for Chinese New Year at Bau’s main bazaar on Sunday.
The Tasik Biru assemblyman said supporting infrastructure, including road connectivity and water supply, must be upgraded in tandem to ensure Bau is ready to accommodate increased traffic and economic activity.
“We need proper road connectivity, including a bypass, so that traffic does not pass through existing kampung areas and cause congestion,” he said.
On water supply, Henry said repair works are continuing on leakages identified in several areas.
“Repairs have been carried out and we will continue to look for more leakages, especially due to old pipes, which remain one of our main challenges,” he said.

Bau’s main bazaar has been specially lit to mark Chinese New Year.
On the decorative lights, he said the initiative has transformed the atmosphere of the town, drawing positive reactions from both residents and visitors even before the official launch.
Henry explained the celebration also commemorated Bau’s historical significance as the entry point of the first Chinese settlers.
“We remember our history, where the first Chinese came to Sarawak through Bau from Sambas as miners.
“This launch and the activities we organise are to mark their existence here for the past 206 years,” he said, adding the Chinese community has played a key role in Bau’s social and economic development.
He highlighted Bau’s packed calendar of events including Ramadan bazaars, Hari Raya celebrations, Gawai Parade on May 23, and Gawai Dayak on June 1.
He added that Bau’s population has increased significantly over the past decade, reaching up to 76,000 residents, contributing to rising income levels and greater economic activity.
