SIBU (March 15): The Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) Sibu is looking at expanding its community activities so as to remain relevant, while encouraging greater participation from both existing and new members.

Its president, Senator Robert Lau, said the association’s members and staff had worked closely together over the years to carry out various activities through its committees and service groups.

“We are fortunate to have a group of very committed members and colleagues working together,” he said during the YMCA Sibu annual general meeting on Friday.

Robert added that the association had also seen many new members joining and actively participating in its programmes in recent years.

While affirming YMCA Sibu’s commitment to strengthening its programmes, he highlighted several challenges faced by the organisation.

“Among the key challenges is sustaining and developing the YMCA Camp located about 32km from the city centre.

“The question is how we can sustain and further develop the camp so that it can continue to operate effectively,” he said.

To address this, Robert said the association had recruited a new staff member to assist in managing the activities at the centre.

Looking ahead, he expressed hope that YMCA Sibu would become more proactive in organising community engagement programmes.

Also present at the meeting were first vice-chairperson Janet Lau, honorary secretary Teresa Lau and treasurer Penghulu Yong.
