18 months’ jail for Padawan man threatening to kill, punch wife

KUCHING (Sept 27): The Magistrates’ Court here has sentenced a man to a total of 18 months in jail after he pleaded guilty to threatening to kill his wife and punching her.

Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan meted out the sentence against Gilbert Richard, 23, from Kampung Tebia Sapit in Padawan after he made the plea to two separate charges under Section 506 of the Penal Code and Section 323 of the Penal Code read together with Section 326A of the same Code.

For the first charge, he was sentenced to six months in jail while for the second charge he was ordered to serve jail for 12 months.

The court ordered the jail sentences to run concurrently.

Gilbert committed the offence against his 23-year-old wife at a rental house in Jalan Datuk Abang Abdul Rahim at around 4.15am on Sept 24, 2024.

Based on the facts of the case, the couple had a verbal argument until Gilbert punched his wife in the right eye after accusing her of having an affair with another man.

Gilbert also threatened to kill his wife by saying that he would stab her.

A police report was lodged and Gilbert was arrested on the next day at around 1.55pm.

The case was prosecuted by Insp Nur Ain Wong while Gilbert was represented by counsel Hii Yiik Yew.
