MIRI, July 11: Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg today announced the implementation of smart farming within housing areas, a collaborative effort between Land Custody and Development Authority (LCDA) and Simfoni Strategies Sdn Bhd.

The initiative aims to blend urban living with advanced agricultural practices, setting a new benchmark in residential development.

The project will develop a total land area of 326 acres, integrating mixed development with urban farming technologies, in Kuala Baram.

“This is the first time we are building smart settlement housing that combines residential and commercial areas with a dedicated zone for urban smart farming,” stated Premier Abang Johari.

He disclosed this during a press conference at the site in Kuala Baram after conducting a site visit.

The initiative seeks to enhance food security by producing high-value fruits for both local and international markets.

Urban smart farming will be a key feature, utilising the latest technologies, including Internet of Things (IoT) and greenhouse farming.

Residents of affordable housing developments within the area will have the opportunity to participate in these farming activities.

“We have allocated over 30 acres specifically for smart farming, allowing residents to collaborate with the company to produce particular fruits,” Abang Johari revealed.

He said the concept is inspired by successful models in Japan and Taiwan, where small land parcels near homes are efficiently used for high-yield farming.

“Even small areas behind houses can be utilised to grow high-value fruits such as melons, which are sold at premium prices overseas,” he noted.

The initiative aims not only to promote sustainable living but also to provide residents with additional income opportunities.

“This new approach in our housing scheme allows residents to participate in farming without needing to sell their produce themselves, as we will have systems in place to facilitate sales,” he emphasised. — DayakDaily
