536 players to compete in Sarawak Invitational Masters Badminton Championship in Sibu

The players from clubs in Australia, Brunei, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, the US and Malaysia will compete in 59 categories for a total of 1,072 matches.

SIBU (July 5): A total of 536 players will compete at the Sarawak Invitational Masters Badminton Championship taking place at the Catholic High School Stadium here from today till Sunday.

World Chinese Badminton Federation (WCBF) Sibu president Ting Wei Ping said the championship offering RM90,000 in prize money is sponsored by the Sarawak Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Ministry with the support of the Badminton Association of Sarawak and the WCBF.

“A total of 536 players have registered to play, making this the highest number of badminton players coming to Sibu to play in a badminton tournament.

“The Open category will be the highlight of this tournament, as the champion will receive RM5,000 and the runner-up RM3,000” he told reporters at the competition venue today, adding that for other senior categories, RM300 will be given to the champions.

The players are from clubs in Australia, Brunei, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, the United States and Malaysia, and will compete in 59 categories for a total of 1,072 matches.

A total of six players are 80 and above and will receive gold medals in recognition of being active players and participants.

“The championship is for all age groups. They will play in their own groups. For instance, if you’re between 50 to 54, you will play in that category,” Ting added. – Bernama
