59 Indonesians detained in Ops Sapu

KUCHING, 14 September: A total of 59 Indonesians were detained by the Malaysian Immigration Department (JIM) Sarawak in Ops Sapu at three locations around Kuching City from 12 September to yesterday.

The operation, which ran from 10 p.m. to 4.30 a.m., was conducted by Kuching's Enforcement Division with the strength of 37 civil complaints and inspection officers.

According to JIM Sarawak, a total of 92 individuals were examined during the operation, with 59 Indonesians being detained on suspicion of various immigration offences.

"At the first location, a terraced house on Chong Kiun Kong Road, Kenyalang Park, 11 Indonesian men were detained out of 11 individuals being questioned.

"All of them are suspected of committing an offence under Section 6 (1) (c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 (Act 155). Two Indonesian passports, five sets of computers, five laptops and 12 mobile phones were seized", he said.

At the second location, a partner house on a construction site in Jalan Saradise, 46 Indonesians comprising 38 men and eight women were detained out of 46 individuals examined.

They are suspected of committing an offence under Section 15 (a) and Section 6 (b) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, in addition to 28 copies of Indonesian international passports being confiscated.

Meanwhile, at the third location of a shared house on a construction site in Batu Kawa, two Indonesian men were detained from 35 individuals being questioned.

Both are suspected of committing an offence under Section 6 (1) (c) of the same act.

All detainees are brought for further proceedings under the provisions of the law in force.

JIM Sarawak also reaffirmed its commitment to continuing to intensify enforcement operations on a deliberate basis based on intelligence and public complaints.
