KUCHING (July 23): A total of 88 candidates from Sarawak achieved a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 4.0 in last year’s Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) examination, said Sarawak Education Department director Datu Dr Azhar Ahmad.

He said 5,860 candidates, including 22 private candidates, registered for the STPM examination held at 83 examination centres, which is an increase from the 5,581 candidates who registered in 2022.

“Meanwhile, a total of 1,910 candidates or about 33.56 per cent achieved a CGPA of between 3.00 and 3.99,” he said at a 2023 STPM excellence appreciation ceremony held at an auditorium of the state department’s head office at Petra Jaya today.

Azhar added Sarawak achieved an overall CGPA of 2.69 in 2023 STPM.

One of the notable achievers in the examination was Muhammad Nazif Idham Ahmadie Abdullah from SMK Merapok in Lawas, who was invited to receive an award from the federal Education Ministry in Kuala Lumpur today.

Although Muhammad Nazif Idham was diagnosed with spasticity, a muscle control disorder that disrupts muscle movement and tightness, he still managed to achieve an extraordinary CGPA of 4.0 in the examination.

Sarawak also saw an improvement in results for the Mandarin language, Arab language, Communicative Malay Literature, Economic, Accounting, Mathematics, Biology, Sports Science and Visual Arts subjects in the examination.

“About 5,601 candidates or 98.49 per cent passed all their subjects and received certificates,” Azhar pointed out.

A total of 16 secondary schools were also recognised during the ceremony for their students’ performances by achieving an overall CGPA of over 3.0.

The schools were SMK Saribas from Betong; SMK Bako, SMK Green Road and SMK Batu Lintang from Kuching; SMK Merbau from Miri; SMK St Anthony from Sarikei; SMK Asajaya from Kota Samarahan; SMK Agama Sheikh Haji Othman Abd Wahab from Padawan; as well as SMK Sacred Heart, SMK Chung Hua, SMK Kampung Nangka, SMK Sungai Merah, SMK Bandar Sibu, SMK Methodist, SMK Rosli Dhoby and SMK Durin from Sibu.
