SIBU (Sept 24): Ninth Infantry Brigade of Malaysia commander Brig Gen Ahmad Norzaini Badrun visited the family of late armed forces personnel Corporal Petrus Linggi Liman at the Military Family Home at Oya Camp on Monday night.
The late Petrus, 29, was a member of the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Ranger Regiment who died while undergoing training in the Song area early Monday morning.
In a Facebook post by Ahmad Norzaini, he said during the visit he also extended financial assistance to Petrus’ widow as a sign of support.
He also expressed the loss felt by all members of the 9th Infantry Brigade about Petrus’ death.
According to an official statement issued by the Public Relations Unit of the Army Headquarters, the tragic incident occurred at 2.45am when the victim and his group were resting near an unpaved logging road.
“While resting, they heard the sound of a motorcycle passing by. Suddenly, a gunshot rang out which was believed to have come from the direction of the motorcyclist.
“An inspection was immediately carried out and it was found one member was injured as a result of the shooting,” it said.
Petrus immediately received emergency treatment at the location before being rushed to the Song health clinic at 4am and subsequently referred to the Kapit hospital. However, he was confirmed dead at 7.43am due to serious injuries.
In a separate statement, Song district police chief DSP Rowney Michael Jalak said Petrus was shot by a civilian suspected of hunting in the forest area of Mile 8, Jalan Balak Multiplus Song.
He said Petrus had suffered severe injuries to his left thigh and hip, and the case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code. The police are in the midst of tracking down the suspect.
Petrus’ remains were brought back to Rumah Janting, Lemujang in Pakan and he will be buried on Sept 27.
