KUCHING: Sarawak’s world-class sports facilities and stunning natural landscapes make it an ideal host for the Borneo Games, a regional sports event that aims to unite athletes from Sarawak, Sabah, Brunei, and Kalimantan.

According to the Sarawak Indigenous Intellectual Association (Perantis), the state’s potential as a hub for extreme sports activities, coupled with its natural beauty, could significantly boost its tourism industry.

“This initiative can strengthen relationships and foster friendships through sports while indirectly promoting economic growth in Sarawak,” the association said in a statement.

The Borneo Games, it added, could also promote camaraderie and enhance athlete development across the Borneo region.

“Sports are a vibrant aspect of life, offering significant benefits when strategically developed. Sports can foster broader interactions, contribute to a healthier society, enhance self-identity, and build stronger friendships,” it added.

The association noted that the Borneo Games could play a crucial role in strengthening social unity.
The shared experiences of success or failure in sports can unite communities, regardless of race or religion.

“This shared experience teaches our community the value of coming together in both positive and challenging times, fostering unity across ethnic and religious lines,” it said.

“As a result, our teams can better navigate challenges, supported by the deep sense of togetherness that sports inspire.”

Last Wednesday (Aug 21), Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced plans to revive the Borneo Games, which were last held in 2009.

The event would involve Malaysia — specifically Sarawak and Sabah — along with Brunei Darussalam and Indonesia (Kalimantan).
