KUCHING (Sept 7): The Air Pollutant Index (API) readings in Kuching, Samarahan and Serian today have returned to moderate levels.

According to the Department of Environment Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS) website, the API readings in Kuching, Samarahan and Serian as of 6pm were 70, 73 and 73 respectively.

On Friday at 6pm, Serian recorded the highest API reading in the country at 152 followed by Kuching 125, while Samarahan at 114 at 11pm later that night.

An API reading of 51 to 100 is considered moderate, while API readings of 101 to 200 are categorised as unhealthy.

The Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) in a statement on Friday said that the air quality in Sarawak was expected to deteriorate given the current southwest monsoon season, which would see consistent winds from the southwest.

It was also reported on Friday that 20 open burning hotspots were detected in Sarawak while 1,825 in Kalimantan based on data from the Asean Specialised Meteorological Centre (ASMC).
