Uggah presents the columbarium grant cheque to Danald.

KUCHING (July 24): The Anglican Church in Sarawak and Brunei’s columbarium project has received an RM5 million grant from the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor).

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas presented the grant to Bishop of the Anglican Church in Sarawak and Brunei, the Rt Rev Datuk Danald Jute, today.

Expected to be completed by 2026, it will be Kuching City’s second columbarium after the Roman Catholic facility at St Peter’s Church, Padungan.

Columbarium project committee chairman Datuk Winsel Athos said construction on the building is now at 14 per cent completion.

The RM8.838 million facility is located between SMK Thomas and the Sarawak Museum.

The project was approved by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg in December 2022.

Danald was quoted then as saying the columbarium would have 14,000 niches.

He also said the facility will be open to Christians from other denominations.
