KUCHING, Sept 16: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has assured that the issue between Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) and Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) can be resolved, with negotiations now focused on several commercial aspects to be finalized.
He said that the key principles agreed between the Federal Government and Sarawak remained a foundation in the negotiations, including ensuring that the interests of Sarawak continue to be taken into account.
"I would like to assure you here on September 16th that this cannot be ignored.
"The principles we have finalized remain, and only some aspects of the commercial agreement now need to be prioritized", he said while addressing the 2026 Malaysia Day Meeting at Borneo Kuching Convention Centre (BCCK), here tonight.
According to Anwar, Sarawak's increased capacity in the oil and gas industry also led to the aspiration of the state to be given more space through Petros.
"The people of Sarawak also feel they should have opportunities and opportunities. Then PETROS was created", he said.
At the same time, he stressed that PETRONAS is a nationally and internationally ranked energy company, while also strengthening PETROS' capabilities.
"Let's both guide and elevate the capabilities of PETROS as our joint venture. That's our attitude", he explained.
Negotiations involving PETRONAS and PETROS have previously been among the highlights in the Federal Government's relations with Sarawak, including in the context of the implementation of the 1963 Malaysia Agreement (MA63).
In related developments, Anwar said the rise in world crude oil prices is also putting pressure on energy costs, but the Federal Government took an approach to not burdening people by ensuring that domestic fuel prices remain under control. - TVS
