KUCHING (July 31): The Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development will adhere to the State Disaster Management Committee’s (SDMC) standard operating procedures (SOPs) for schools during the ongoing heatwave across Sarawak.

Minister Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn said his ministry will follow guidelines from SDMC in managing the situation.

“This one, we are guided by the State Disaster Management Committee’s decision, which is under the chairmanship of (Deputy Premier) Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah.

“They will issue directives from time to time because we consider this a disaster.

“So, we stay guided by them, complying with whatever conditions or terms they provide,” he told a press conference today.

He had been asked about the State Education Department’s SOPs for schools amidst the heatwave, including decisions on school closures and the continuation of co-curricular activities.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued several heatwave warnings for districts across Sarawak as temperatures soared as high as 36 degrees Celsius in some areas.
