MIRI (Aug 5): A blood donation campaign organised by the Youth section of Miri Hakka Association on Sunday recorded 68 successful donors out of the 91 registered participants.

Of the number, seven were first-time donors, while five individuals registered as organ donors.

The campaign held at the Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) training centre here was part of the association’s yearly activities.

Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, who officiated the event, commended Miri Hakka Association for supporting Miri Hospital Blood Bank by helping to replenish its blood stock.

“To obtain a good pint of blood, it requires a healthy adult who has enough blood for themselves and extra to spare for donation.

“It is crucial to also note that donating blood greatly benefits one’s physical and mental health. So I highly encourage healthy adults to come forward to become blood donors,” said the Senadin assemblyman.

He also highlighted the importance of registering new donors, as the number of existing donors may decrease upon them reaching the age of 60.

“At this age, they are likely to be discouraged to donate blood due to health reasons,” he added.

Meanwhile, campaign organising chairman William Liew thanked sponsors, MRC Miri Blood Donor Recruitment Committee, and Miri Hospital Blood Bank for their support.
