KUCHING (July 22): Former Nangka state assemblyman Datuk Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah has been appointed as the 21st Dewan Negara President today.

Awang Bemee replaces Datuk Mutang Tagal who passed away due to heart complications on May 10.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim nominated Awang Bemee, the sole candidate for the post, at the meeting of the Dewan Negara in the Parliament today.

“He, who is a native of Sarawak, has served in the High Court of Borneo Sarawak starting in 1984 and has experience in handling various cases at all levels of court including the Federal Court.

“He has been appointed as the chairman of the Kuching Port Authority since 1998 and has previously served as a member of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly for three terms.

“Indeed, he has extensive experience and in accordance with Meeting Rule 2(1), I have ensured that he agrees to serve, if elected.

The motion was seconded by the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform), Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.
