KUCHING (Oct 14): A total of 17 Urban Renewal projects in Kuching, Sibu, Kapit, Bintulu, Miri and Lawas have been approved under the 12th Malaysia Plan (1MP) with a total allocation ceiling of RM601 million, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.
He informed that all these projects are in various stages of planning and implementation, especially the Darul Hana Development Project in Kuching which is a pilot project.
“The Sarawak government through the Ministry of Natural Resources and Urban Development (MUDeNR) and implementing agencies such as the Land Custody and Development Authority (LCDA) are actively implementing various Urban Renewal projects and programmes.
“It is an initiative of the Sarawak government based on sustainable development and balanced planning. (This is) to ensure the quality of life in line with the Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030) through economic prosperity, social inclusion and environmental sustainability towards Sarawak Maju (developed state) by the year 2030,” he said.
He mentioned these in a statement following the presentation of compensation cheques, land titles and Darul Hana house keys to land owners from Kampung Pulo Ulu at Wisma Sabati today.
Awang Tengah, who is also Natural Resources and Urban Development Second Minister, said these urban renewal project areas can be new growth centres and satellite towns in line with decentralisation of cities and major towns in Sarawak.
On the Darul Hana project, which is the pioneer urban renewal project in Sarawak, Awang Tengah said the project has been carefully planned and took into account the urgent needs of the affected villagers at the 13 villages in the Seberang Hilir area.
He pointed out that among the objectives of the project are to improve the quality of life, safety and health of residents in Seberang Hilir; and to improve the image and quality of the 4.1km riverside area from Kampung Boyan to Kampung Bintawa Hilir.
He said the objectives included to redevelop existing residential areas into a more planned community development while maintaining a ‘village’ atmosphere, creation of job and business opportunities; providing better and integrated public facilities to local communities; and provision of better and continuous learning facilities.
Also present were Deputy Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, MUDeNR permanent secretary Datu Abdullah Julaihi, LCDA general manager Datu Zaidi Mahdi and Land and Survey director Awang Zamhari Awang Mahmood.
