SEBUYAU, July 9: The construction of Batang Lupar 1 Bridge has demonstrated world-class engineering capabilities, with several record-setting techniques and equipment deployed to overcome challenging site conditions.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the project was among the most challenging engineering undertakings in Malaysia due to its location at a river estuary with strong currents, powerful waves and complex geological conditions.
He said the project required advanced engineering solutions, including the use of the largest launching gantry in Malaysia for connecting bridge girders.
“Besides that, the 108-metre piling barge used for the project is the tallest piling barge ever used in Malaysia,” he said during the bridge launching ceremony, which was officiated by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg today.
Uggah, who is also Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development, said the engineering expertise applied in the project enabled the installation of piles measuring 2.5 metres in diameter and reaching depths of up to 95 metres.
He added that construction was further complicated by the presence of Triso Island, which divides the river flow into two navigation channels and increases current speeds by up to two times.
“The piling works at Pier 52 near Triso Island faced challenges, resulting in a delay of about three months. However, there is no need to worry — the bridge is very safe and built according to the required standards,” he emphasised.
The bridge features a 598.8-metre cable-stayed main span, a 250-metre-wide navigation channel and pylons measuring 111.5 metres high, making it one of Sarawak’s most significant engineering landmarks.
With careful planning and innovative design, Uggah added that the bridge was successfully constructed without affecting the ecosystem of Triso Island, demonstrating the Sarawak government’s commitment towards sustainable development and environmental preservation. — DayakDaily
