Bau considering setting up sister cities with China

BAU: Datuk Henry Harry Jinep has revealed plans to establish a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for creating sister cities or provinces with China in Bau.

The Tasik Biru assemblyman said the initiative, still under discussion and pending government approval, aims to strengthen cultural and economic ties rooted in historical connections from the mining era.

“We are keen to establish this relationship, especially given the historical ties between Bau and China, tourism development is a key focus, and we’re working aggressively to ensure Bau becomes a major tourist attraction.

“Recently we visited a Hakka village in Sichuan, which aligns with our plans to set up a similar village in Bau. Such initiatives can boost tourism and foster cultural exchange,” he told reporters after officiating at the Bau Cultural Night in conjunction with the 50th anniversary Malaysia-China diplomatic relationship at Bau Civic Centre on Aug 7.

The government plans to provide infrastructure such as good roads, while encouraging local investors to develop socio-economic activities and tourism products.

This kind of development, he said, requires funding and gradual acceptance from the community, but the benefits will be significant.

He stressed the importance of maintaining long-term relationships with China, noting significant investments in Sarawak, including in the methanol industry.

“We look forward to continuing our partnerships, enhancing trade and cultural exchanges, and welcoming more investments from China,” he said.

Also present during the event were Consul General of the People’s Republic of China Xing Weiping, Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang, and Bau District Officer Constantine Gerald David.
